Aaron’s Partner

Yet Another SDAASaturday! Enjoy!

Chapter numbers are hard.

Okay, so it’s the day after the night before.

I wake up at around midday to my phone buzzing.

Well done. New mission brief available.

HQ ASAP

-D-C

Great… What are they gonna have me doing this time? Hold up a 7/11?

I stumble my way through a shower, breakfast and getting dressed.

When I walk outside, it’s pouring down rain, which gives me a sense of calm that makes me forget about last night… funnily enough, I’m more upset about what happened with Chloe than I am about the armed robbery.

I slowly stroll through the rain, making my way to the HQ.

I love the rain. The cool breeze, the icy splash on my face reminding me that I’m alive, the smell, the feeling or peace that occurs when I hear the raindrops falling on the ground around me.

It takes me a long time to get to the HQ, partially because I’m walking, not running, but mostly because of the rain. I can’t help but stand outside and feel the cold shower running over my face, washing all the events of the last week off my body and out of my mind… and I’m ready to start again. I walk through the door.

“Careful, Mate… He’s in a mood.” Lennox whispers as he walks past me.

I haven’t even reached his office yet, and I can hear Dwight’s voice grumbling through the halls.

I push his door open.

“You called, boss?” I say, lazily.

“Wait outside, Aaron.” He sharply snaps.

Lennox was right…

Moments later a young blonde girl exits his office. She seems to be in a bit of trouble… she shakes off the meeting and in the process locks eyes with me. “You’re Aaron Curtis, aren’t you? Prodigy?”

“That’s what they keep telling me…” I respond.

“I’m Selina Hudson! My codename is ‘Cheerleader’…I’m a big fan of yours! Well more of your parents, but I’ll be following your career as well!” she says, buzzing with excitement.

“How wonderful…” I respond

“My goal is to be like your mother, she was my idol growing up! My father worked with her a lot.”

“So did mine…” I dryly joke.

She awkwardly chuckles, “Sadly, I don’t think I’ll ever get the chance to be like her… Dwight says if I screw up one more mission, I’m fired.”

“Is that really the worst thing?”

I’m not consciously trying to be rude, but I really don’t want to be conscious right now.

“Is it true your mother once walked into an open war zone armed with a pocketknife and walked out with the head of one of Uganda’s biggest warlords?”

“You’d probably know better that I would, they died when I was a baby… didn’t get to ask them many questions.”

“Oh, right… sorry, how stupid of me.”

“Don’t worry about it.” Several awkward milliseconds drag on… “Well, I gotta get in there.

I push past here and enter Dwight’s office.

“So, you’ve met Ms Hudson?” Dwight asks.

“Yeah, she’s great at talking.” I sarcastically smile.

“Not so great at following orders… which is why you’re here.”

“To follow orders?” I’m slightly confused.

“To teach.”

“Huh?”

“You did so well on your last mission, you even got back more than the owed amount. So, you’ll take Selina on a few missions, teach her how we work, and if she doesn’t noticeably improve within a week…”

“She’s fired?”

“More or less.”

“Brilliant… What’s the mission?”

“File’s on the table.”

Target: Jonah Bridge

Target is CEO of Bridge International and a high value member of ‘The Guild’

Target will be inside his Dreyburn City office on the top floor of the Bridge International building

Target will be most accessible after sundown

See Iceman for details of transportation

“Any questions?” Dwight asks.

“Several!” I shoot back, “What the hell is ‘The Guild’? how the hell am I supposed to get to Dreyburn City? And who the hell is ‘Iceman’?”

“Iceman is Gabe North’s alias, he’s also organising transport, and The Guild is a long story.”

“Okay, that about covers it…”

“Go see North, and take the Cheerleader with you” Dwight directs.

“Is that her codename, or an insult?”

“Little of both.” Dwight grins slightly.

Great… killing a CEO with a cheerleader… if that doesn’t sound like a terrible idea, I’m Harry Potter!

I find Selina and drag her to the garage where North is waiting.

“Whaddup, iceman!” I say, mocking the stupid codename.

“We can’t all be ‘Prodigy’…” he says, staring daggers. “For the record, I advised against putting the two of you on this mission, given its sensitive nature and that you are our two least qualified recruits… but Dwight says you can handle it.”

“Thanks for the vote of confidence, Icey…” Selina chirps.

“Ugh… Children…” North mutters under his breath. “You’ll be air dropped onto the roof of the Bridge Building in one of our most advanced Techjets, it lifts off from here at 9pm this evening, be here, geared up by 8:30pm.” He says, snapping back to business mode. “Here’s a detailed copy of tonight’s mission specifics, study it. Aaron, you’re taking the lead on this one, don’t screw it up.”

“Noted.” I reply, then leave.

But Selina follows me…

“It’s really cool that we’re going on a mission together!” she says, buzzing.

“They only put you on with me so that I could fix any messed that you made, okay? We’re not going to be partners, we’re not going to be friends… I’m only here to bring you up to a decent standard, and then you’re on your own!” I snap…

Even I thought that was too much, and I said it…

“See you at 8:3O.” She snaps before abruptly exiting.

“And they call me ‘Iceman’” North mocks.

I respond with a certain gesture that consists of a finger protruding from the centre of the hand.

I’ve had enough of this place for one day… I need food.

I run through the town a few times before deciding on a place to eat. Sushi is always great.

I walk in and grab the fullest looking Sushi platter I can and sit on a table, when who should walk in, but the Cheerleader herself.

I can only just hear what she’s saying… “Dawn, it’s been a long and disappointing day… gimme the usual and a coke please.”

“I’m sorry Sal, we had a super busy lunch rush… We just sold the last one to the guy on table 6”

She wanders her eyes around the room before spotting me, the guy on table 6… she rolls her eyes and swiftly exits, I stand and rush after her.

“I’m the reason she’s had a bad day…” I defend to Dawn, the sushi dispenser.

“Wait, Cheerleader!” I scream after her.

“What? I have nothing to say to you!” she fires at me.

“Well, I do!” I shoot back.

“Well what is it!” she grumbles, expecting me to up the argument.

But I don’t, instead I smile. “I ordered too much, would you wanna split with me?”

She grins slightly, “Only for the Sushi, not you.”

“Fair enough.” I say as I hold the door for her.

Once we’re inside, and have downed a few Tuna Rolls, I explain why I snapped at her…I tell her I’m trying to distance myself from the memory of my family, I tell her what happened with Chloe, I tell her I’m trying to be a good guy… hence, lunch.

“So, you were a dick, because you’re trying to be a good guy?” she asks, looking just as annoyed as I feel.

“Exactly!”

“You know that’s totally messed up, right?”

“Why do you think we’re having lunch together? I felt terrible.”

“And here I was thinking it was some kind of move…” she says slightly smirking. “Thank you, Aaron, I appreciate this.”

“It was the least I could do.”

“Literally the least.” She says laughing.

For a moment, we laugh and it’s almost like we’re friends… until I look out the window and see Chloe, shaking her head… god I hate small towns, you run into everyone…

“Hey, I’ll see you tonight… I gotta run!” I say as I spring onto my feet and head after Chloe.

I catch up to her pretty quickly, considering after she hears me call her name, she stops dead in her tracks and spins around like a thing that spins fast. “You know what, Aaron! I’m really glad that I saw that… because after the most emotionally draining morning of my life, I was just heading to meet Cody to tell him I was breaking up with him, then I saw you with some cheerleader, sharing Sushi and having a great laugh!”

“Okay, I’m gonna need you to calm down while I explain this…”

“Don’t bother! I’m so over guys!”

“She’s a co-worker…”

“Huh?”

“I just got a job, I come here for my lunch break and I happened to run into someone from work… I’m not on a date.”

“Sure, like I can believe that…”

Right then Selina walks up behind me taps me on the shoulder, saving my ass. “See you at work, Aaron!” before quickly disappearing back towards the HQ.

“Oh my god, Aaron! I’m so sorry!” Chloe says, wrapping her arms around me… it’d be perfect if she hadn’t just accused me of something. “Why do I always think the worst of you?” she says, still wrapped around me.

“Past experience with guys?” I tease.

She pulls herself away and smiles… “Maybe…”

“Were you really about to break up with Cody, for me?” I ask… not really wanting to know the answer.

“Maybe… I don’t know… I mean, it’s definitely time to re-evaluate our relationship, but weather it’s because of you or because it’s time is still rattling in my head…”

“If it helps,” I pause for a moment and put my hand on her shoulder, “I can do a British accent.”

“How would that help?”

I turn on my best British voice, “How would it not?”

She giggles, “You’re right, that made my choice so much easier, I’m walking away from you before I tear your clothes off right here.” She says walking turning away from me and continuing her path. She looks over her shoulder at me and smiles, “Sorry again about accusing you of… well, I don’t know what. But I’m sorry.” Then she disappears back into the street and I, back into my head.

I read through my mission file again, a few times.

This one’s a little more detailed than my last one… although the gum wrapper in my pocket is more detailed than my last mission file.

Apparently, Jonah pissed a lot of people off…

‘A high value member of ‘the guild’ until his ambition pushed him to try and overthrow the leaders’

Would mean a lot more, if I knew what the guild was…

Maybe I’ll ask Lennox next chapter…

Which is now!

I text Lennox and ask him to meet me at my place, he does.

Time to get some straight answers.

Lennox knocks on my door, I invite him in.

“Hey buddy, come on in. can I get you anything?” I ask.

“Do you have any beer?”

“I’m 16, where would I get beer from?”

“Good point.” He says, pulling a hip flask out of his jacket and taking a sip. “What brings me here?” he asks taking another sip.

“I have a few questions, about something called ‘The Guild’.”

“The guild? They’re a secret society of rich A-holes who use their money and influence to control every faction of assassins. They’re the original Corps. Why would you wanna know about that?”

“One of my targets is an ex-member.”

“That’s not good news, Aaron.” Lennox says turning white.

“Why not?”

“The guild always takes care of their own, in every sense… they offer protection, and in the event of betrayal, they take heads. If they’re sending you against a member of the guild, there’s a shady reason.” He says taking a much larger drink than before.

“Should I decline the mission?”

“No, go! Take the guy out. Don’t mention anything I’ve said to anyone. Give me a chance to investigate.”

“Investigate?” I ask.

“You can’t know. I’ve already said too much to you.”

“Fair enough, but promise me something? If you find something, come to me with it and I’ll help you, don’t do anything alone.”

“Deal, now I’m going to a bar.”

And he did, and I got everything ready for my mission.

It’s 8 pm and I’m at the HQ, geared up and ready. All I need now is a partner…

“Where’s the other blonde?” asks North.

“I told her to be here early… already not looking great for her.”

We wait… but god knows why…

“Aaron, it’s wheels up in 5! You haven’t even been briefed yet. I strongly suggest we forget her.” North commands.

“She has a right to prove herself. She’s probably just making sure everything’s fine before she gets here. It’s her last chance after all.”

Seconds later, Selina bounds through the door… wearing a sleeveless mini dress with tights underneath, with a sword hanging off her hip.

“looks like she’s taken the ‘cheerleader’ name literally…” North scoffs to the pilot.

“Selina… a word in private?” I sharply request. Before pulling her away behind the jet. “Where the hell have you been? I just spent the last hour defending you and you show up dressed like an extra in Suckerpunch! And if that wasn’t bad enough, you show up to a covert mission with a sword, where’s your gun?”

“Well, my personal gun is broken at the moment and the British guy at the armoury said that all the guns were being used so he gave me this.”

Lennox… you ass.

“Okay fair enough, get in the jet… we’re behind schedule.”

We take off and get briefed in the jet… our objective is to breach Bridge’s office from the roof and take out any security we find. It’s not going to be easy, especially watching over Selina as well…

The trip to Dreyburn takes about 15 minutes, when we arrive North puts the jet in camo mode and hovers above the building.

“We can’t land, you guys will have to jump… you’ve got half an hour to get in and out and make it too the extraction point. If you don’t we leave without you.”

“Roger that Iceman.” I say, jumping out of the plane, Selina following closely behind… A little too closely if you ask me, seeing as she landed on me. I push her off the top of me and spring to my feet, “Let’s go!” I say heading towards the door.

“Wait,” Selina cries. “We gotta take care of alarms and security cameras, I have a controlled EMP burst that will cut the power to the building for 2 hours, we just gotta hook it to a fuse box.”

“Wow, that’s smart. I would’ve just shot the cameras…”

Selina winks at me as she attaches the small box to the big box and flicks a few switches.

The power to the whole building flickers for a few seconds and then cuts out completely, then we enter.

Now, let’s fast forward to our mission report… just to make things interesting.

The two of us are sitting in Dwight’s office a few days later, safe to say, he isn’t happy. Lennox and North are sitting in the corner, North also isn’t happy, but Lennox looks like he’s having a ball… so there’s a win.

“25 dead guards, the top floor of the building burned down and the two of you missed the extraction and didn’t check in for several hours. Anyone wanna tell me what happened?” Dwight growls.

“Well Dwight…” I say, and lie my ass off…” I brought a focused EMP that shut off the buildings power, but I forgot to account for the backup generators. So after about 5 minutes, power came back and we had to improvise. After we’d taken care of the target, the guards had us completely surrounded, so I threw a grenade or 5 at them all and that led to the fire… then we realized the cameras were still up, so Selina and I went floor by floor and shut down every camera.” I smirk, “Any questions?”

Dwight’s face turned to stone. Well, not literally… but his expression was, ya know, stone like.

“The two of you are suspended from active duty for a week. Maybe when you come back, you’ve grown a brain… Selina, I suggest you use this week to improve your skills, so we don’t need to have another conversation like this. Now get out… all of you.” He sternly growls.

We all exit swiftly, but Selina grabs my arm and holds me at the door for a moment, “Hey, Aaron. I just wanna say thanks. Even though nothing went right on our mission, I had a blast. Especially when it was over.” She smiles timidly then leaves, as Lennox appears behind me.

“Aaron, my friend. You are insane… let’s talk in my office.”

“Wait, you have an office.”

Apparently, he did!

“I have a few questions, mate. Number 1, what really happened on that mission?” he grins.

“I just told you, in Dwight’s office.”

“Aaron, buddy, I’m not Dwight. I don’t believe for a second that you were stupid enough to let any of the things you described happen. Which begs the question, what did happen?”

“I have no idea… I went in to take out the target, and when I walked out, Selina had started a fire…”

“She’s a little useless, isn’t she?”

“Yeah, but she’s really trying… I made the story up to cover her ass, she’s on her last legs with Dwight.”

“And is covering the only thing you’re interested in doing with her arse?” he asks grinning cheekily.

“Lennox!”

“I’m just sayin’… you guys disappeared from our radar for a few hours, she’s a pretty young thing, and you’re a guy, just like the rest of us. Plus, I heard what she said, ‘Especially when it ended’” he says, sarcastically fluttering his eyelashes. “Why else would you be throwing yourself under a bus, if you weren’t getting a little…”

I throw a stapler at his head. “I’m not interested in her, romantically or physically. She’s nice, and fun! She deserves a chance to prove herself, just like I had.”

“Okay, okay!” he says, chuckling. “I’m just saying, she seems interested in you, if you weren’t so hung up on the brunette.”

“I’m gonna ignore that.”

“Okay, final question… what happened when you went off radar?”

“Selina spotted a karaoke place near the Bridge building, and wanted to go in for a bit, I thought it sounded fun, so I said sure. We kinda lost track after the first few songs.”

“Aaron, you’re truly an idiot.”

“Ditto, Chuck!” I say as I leave his office. “Let me know how the investigation goes, see you in a week.”

Okay, before I end this chapter, let me give you a quick overview of the next week.

On Monday the 24th, I went to school, and Chloe had talked to Cody, who is threatening me every second.

On Tuesday the 25th, I found out I can get next doors wi-fi.

On Wednesday the 26th, Tim and I watched Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix.

On Thursday the 27th, Cody and Chloe had apparently repaired their relationship, and Cody rubbed it in my face by sending me a series of pictures of them on dates over Facebook.

On Friday the 28th, Ally gave me an invitation to a birthday/Halloween party.

On Saturday the 29th, I went shopping with Tim and Ryan for said party, also went back to work.

And we’ll pick it up from there next chapter, which I’m gonna say is 10?

Hope you enjoyed!

Peace out homies!

Aaron’s first mission!

One of my favourite chapters this week! enjoy!

Chapter the one after the last one (I still can’t remember that number.)

 So… it’s 6:45 on Friday the 21st of October, and I have a plan!

Stacey tells me that they’re having a little marathon, that means more than one movie. Which means that I can watch one, say I have an awesome movie at home, complete the mission, stop at the video store, go back to Chloe’s house and watch a few more. Sounds easy, right.

Only that is not at all how the night went.

Let’s hear all about it.

When I arrive at Chloe’s house, the other guests have already arrived… and what a guest list it was. Everyone brought a movie to watch, except me.

There was Chloe and Stacey, who I knew. Chloe suggested Casino Royale, whereas Stacey prefers From Russia with Love. Girls who appreciate James Bond… Yay life!

Christy Reece, who ‘Was like totally in love with Ryan Gosling.’ Her movie pick was some sappy romance that I’d never heard of… I think it’s about a textbook or a notepad or something.

Heather Lewis, who spent most of the night posting pictures on Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter and all sorts of other crap. Her movie pick was something from the late 90’s… Clueless.

Ally… not sure why she was here. But yay, a friend! And her movie pick was Music and Lyrics. I’ve never heard of it, but Hugh Grant!

And me…

We watch Ally’s movie first, and it wasn’t bad! Seriously, do yourself a favour, once you stop reading this, watch it…

They ask me what I picked and I feign forgetfulness.

“Damn it! I left it back at my place! Just start watching something and I’ll go grab it!” I say as I race towards the door.

We started watching just after 7, it’s now nearly 9… I have enough time to change for my next performance. I go home and change into my body armour, I doubt I’ll need it, but It looks cool.

It’s 9:30 now, I wait outside the store and I watch everything the target does. He still hasn’t locked to door, all I need is an opening and I can rush in.

He’s peeing! Go, go!

I put on my good ol’ fashion burglars mask and slowly creep through the door.

 I’m in!

I quickly take cover in the shadowy part of his office. He slowly lumbers out of the bathroom and thuds his wide frame onto an office chair. I sneak up behind him and draw my gun.

“Call your wife,” I say thumbing back the hammer and using my big boy voice. “You’re gonna be home late.”

He stammers and starts tearing up. “Wha- what? Why?”

“You didn’t pay your bills, Mr Davis… I’m here to collect. Call your wife.”

He dials the phone and talks to his wife, “Hey honey, I’m gonna be a little late tonight. I got a lot still to do here… love you too… bye.”

“That’s sweet.” I say right before knocking him out and tying him to his chair.

I roll him into the back room and wait for him to wake up…

Still waiting…

Maybe I should’ve brought a book…

Finally!!! He’s coming too! It’s time to make my threat. I’ve been practicing all day.

“Hey, Mr Davis. I’m… Well you don’t need to know my name, but I work for the people who you hired to help you, and you never made good on your side of the deal, so they sent me to pick it up.” He moans and groans through the rope I tied around his head as a gag. “Okay, Phil… Can I call you Phil?” no answer, how rude… “Oh, right. Gagged. I’m gonna call you Phil. So, Phil. Here’s what we’re gonna do. You’re gonna empty your safe into this Duffel bag, not just the amount we need, everything in there. After that, I take what you owe us back to my boss, he scratches your name off his list and I return what’s left to you in a discreet and timely fashion. Whaddayasay?” no answer. “Oh right, still gagged. I’ll just help myself.” I stand up and make my way to the safe. “Code?”

He lifts his hands up as high as he can, being tied up and all, and holds up a few fingers to tell me the code. 3-4-0-0.

“What’s the significance of that? Kids birthday?” he nods. “Adorable!” I chirp as I scoop the stacks of hundred-dollar bills into my bag. “You have insurance, right Phil?” he nods. “Does it cover robbery?” he nods. “Great, then it’ll all work out great for you! I don’t even need to bring the rest back, let’s give it to my boss as an apology, shall we?” I say as I zip up the bag and head out the door, “Remember Phil, you were robbed, and the guy wore a mask, just like this one. You can now reach for your phone and call 911.” He moans through the gag. “Oh right, gag.” I untie the rope around his mouth and head out the back entrance. “Have a good night, Phil.”

That went very well. Except it took much longer than I thought it would… there’s only one video store open still. I cover myself in the shadows of the alley around the corner and I change my outfit back into my streets and stuff the mask and armour into the bag with the cash, I turn the corner and head into the movie store. “Hey, do you have Kingsman?” I ask as I hear police sirens screaming past outside.

“Sure do, last copy in stock!” he grinned at me “Last copy in town.”

“Great! All I have is a Hundred, can you change that?” Phil’s treat.

He couldn’t, I told him he could keep it. I race over to Dwight with the money and drop it off, then I race to the other side of town to continue movie night.

I know what you’re thinking, ‘he said the plan didn’t work, but it seems to be going smoothly.’ Well I never said the plan didn’t work, I just said my night didn’t go that way… it was much better.

I knock on Chloe’s door and she answers. “Aaron? Where have you been, we thought you ditched.”

“Turns out, my friend borrowed the movie, but he’s staying with his dad in the city this weekend, so I searched around for a movie store that had it!”

“Aaron, it’s 2am… you’ve been gone for hours, everyone is either asleep or gone home.”

“Oh, well I guess I should go…”

“Well no, I mean… you went to all that trouble to find the movie, the least I could do is make you popcorn and watch it with you.” She says smiling… perfectly.

“How could I say no?” I smile back, a little like a drunk tortoise.

We walk into the house and she put the movie on.

“Aaron, I gotta ask… was that story true?” she says, looking at my trying to spot if I’m lying.

“No, not entirely. I got to my place and realised I lent it, so I went to every video store in town and nowhere had it… apparently, it’s quite a popular film,” I giggle.”

“So how did you get it, and how where you gone for 5 hours?”

 “I took a bus to Davistown… there’s a store there that’s open 24 hours.”

“You did all that to watch this movie?”

“It’s a good movie!” I smile and take a breath. “And I didn’t want you to think I was lying about having the movie…”

“Why?”

“I know, it’s stupid… but I just didn’t want to do anything to make you think I wasn’t a good guy.”

“Aaron, I wouldn’t have cared!”

“I know that! My brain just doesn’t work properly when it comes to… well… movies.”

She giggles, and we share a moment until there’s a knock on the door. Well really, It’s more of a jackhammer.

“Chloe!” yells the obviously inebriated voice on the other side. “Come out here!”

“Ugh… that’s Cody.” She groans. “There was a party tonight.”

“He seems like a winner.”

“You better go into the kitchen, if he sees you here, alone with me…”

“I get it.”

I stand up and hide myself in the kitchen… I can’t hear much, but what I do hear is absolute gold!

“Chloe… we should… I wanna do stuff!”

“Go home, Cody. We’ll talk tomorrow.”

“It’s tomorrow TONIGHT BAAAABY!”

Then I hear a few mumbles and grumbles and the door close.

Chloe slowly glides into the kitchen.

“Sorry about that,” she says. “He doesn’t have any self-control when he drinks…” she says looking down, in both mood and direction.

“He does this a lot?” I ask.

“Every other weekend there’s a party or a get-together or some stupid reason to get slammed.”

“He doesn’t invite you?”

“He used to… I stopped going when I saw what the people he hangs around with get up to.”

I want to ask what, but she clearly doesn’t want to talk about it.

“Should we watch the movie?” I say, trying to change the topic.

“If it’s all the same to you, Aaron, I’m not really in the mood for a movie.”

“Do you want me to leave?” I ask.

“Would you mind staying?” she asks. “I’d just like someone to talk to.”

“I have an idea,” I grin. “Would you like to see my favorite place on Earth?”

 “What is it?” she asks.

“I’ll tell you when we get there.”

“I don’t know, Aaron, it’s late…”

“Oh, come on!” I say, grabbing her hand and leading her towards the door. “What’s life without a little rebellion.”

“We can’t be out late!”

“We’ll be back before later!”

“That makes no sense…” she says, grabbing a coat and slinking out the door.

“It did in my head.” I say following behind her and closing the door.

My phone buzzes in my pocket, I’m worried it’s a mission. But it’s not.

Very smooth. Have fun! 😉

-Stacey Davis.

I stifle a laugh and lead Chloe to my favorite place on Earth, as promised.

I cover her eyes and lead her to my house…

And I reveal my favourite place.

“Where are we?” she asks.

“My place!”

“Aaron…”

“Don’t worry, I’m not trying anything! My favorite place is close by here!”

“Okay, where is it?”

“Up there!” I say, pointing to the roof and the ladder that leads to it.

“Your roof?” she looks at me and smiles, “Okay!” she says, walking over to the ladder.

“Ladies first” I smirk.

“Not likely, I’m wearing a dress…” she smirks back.

“I could get changed into mine, if it’d make you feel less self-conscious.” I say, winking at her.

She slaps me playfully in the chest and steps onto the first rung of the ladder. “Don’t look up my skirt!” she giggles.

And I don’t. I promise… okay maybe once… I’m only human.

We reach the top and she seems very underwhelmed by the view, nothing but beige rooftops and black roads poorly lit by the dim streetlights. “This is it?” she scoffs.

“Well, it’s a lot more impressive if you’re facing the right way.” I grin as I slowly turn her body to face my favourite thing in the entire world.

Just in the distance, beyond the highways and trees, are the lights and skyscrapers of Dreyburn City. Each one like a tiny little star, the bright reds, greens, blues and whites buzzing with the energy of the city. I look at Chloe, whose bright eyes have caught the luminance of every piece of neon and LED that litter the sky.

“It’s beautiful,” she says, “You’re right, much better than the other way.” She chuckles

She takes a seat on top of my roof, and asks me to sit next to her.

The conversation never stopped, never had any awkward silences. Time melted away with every word, but we barely noticed, we were too enthralled by the lights of the city and the level of discussion.

Have you ever talked to someone and thought, ‘this person is, in every way, my equal!’ That was what it was like talking to Chloe.

“Promise not to laugh?” She says stifling a smile.

“Cross my heart!” I reply, trying my best to look like Ryan Reynolds.

She runs her hands through her dark hair and hesitantly answers the question I asked her 20 minutes ago

“I’ve always wanted to be a lawyer…”

“That’s awesome!” I reply, “like Matt Murdoch!”

“Who’s that?” She replies looking at me in a way I pray never ends.

“He’s a Lawyer.”

And he’s also a blind crime fighter, but I’m trying to dial down the nerd…

“Figures!” She laughs.

“Why would I laugh at that? I think that’s a great goal. ‘Chloe Miller: Attorney at Law!’ It has a nice ring to it!”

“Not everyone thinks so,” she sighs. “Everyone I’ve ever told thinks it’s a stupid idea… Especially Cody.”

“Oh yeah, that I get. He doesn’t exactly strike me as the most supportive guy.”

“Truth be told, he’s not.”

There’s a revelation!

“Don’t get me wrong, he’s great! He’s the first guy I’ve ever really liked… but lately, I’ve just been thinking that he’s more interested in his buddies than he is me.”

“What makes you say that?” I ask, knowing exactly what she means.

“Well, tonight. I told him I wanted him to be with me, but he chose to go to that party with his friends.”

“Sure, yeah.”

“And there was that whole Tank thing… he overreacted way too much. I thought that you’d nearly killed him the way he was acting, but Stacey told me that you only hit him twice! I mean, how much damage can you do with two punches?” she says, mocking.

A lot more than you’d think, actually.

“He probably just likes the way people look at him when he has this beautiful girl next to him.” I say, trying my best to compliment Chloe, while at the same time, making Cody look bad!

“Beautiful?” she sneers. “I don’t think so…”

“Of course, you don’t, you’re a teenage girl…” I smirk, “Isn’t it, like your job, to hate how you look?”

“Oh, shut up!” she laughs and shoves my playfully.

“Honestly, though… you need to see yourself for what you are.”

“Which is?”

“You’re a smart, driven young woman who just happens to be one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever seen in my life.”

“You really see me like that?”

“The crime is, that you don’t”

“Well if I thought I saw as good looking as you say, I’d be a vain bitch…” she says, winking a little and laughing. “But thank you, Aaron. No one’s ever said something so nice to me before.”

“Not even your boyfriend?”

“No, not even Cody…”

“Why are you with him?”

“Well, we’ve known each other for a while, it felt right.”

“Felt?”

There was a few moments silence, the first one all morning.

“Cody and I aren’t working, are we?”

“I can’t really say, Chlo… I can only tell you what I’ve already said… Cody’s an ass, you’re great. What you choose to do with that is up to you.”

“You’re alright, Aaron.”

“Thanks, I was aiming for ‘alright’”

Chloe stops and sighs for a moment, “I should break up with Cody, shouldn’t I?”

“I don’t want to push you towards an answer, but I think that you should be with someone who appreciates you.”

“Someone, like you?” she smirks.

“Not someone ‘Like’ me… someone me.”

“Aaron, are you flirting with me?” she says, blushing.

“That depends, is it working?”

“Maybe a little… you’re very charming”

“I try…”

“You don’t need to try that hard…” She leans in slightly, almost like she’s going in for a kiss. “You’re a nice guy, Aaron.”

She’s right… which is why I need to stop.

“Chloe, I’m not that nice, but I’m trying to be…you’re angry with Cody and sleep deprived. So as much as I’d love to do something about the romantic tension that’s building here, you need to sort things out with Cody, then maybe if you still want, I’ll be here.”

“I should go… the suns coming up” she says, looking slightly embarrassed.

“It is, Isn’t it? Should I walk you home.” I ask.

“I don’t think that’s the best idea, Aaron.” She says, walking over to the ladder. “Thanks for showing me this, Aaron. It was really wonderful.” She smiles awkwardly then disappears down the ladder.

And like that, she was gone.

I sat on that roof for another 20 minutes, the only thing that snapped me out of the repeated cycle of ‘you are a complete moron!’ that was going on in my head, was a message from Stacey.

Chloe told me what happened. Good job! You’re wearing her down.

-Stacey Davis.

Well that’s encouraging.

I need to sleep…

It’s been a long and eventful day… and chapter. And both are ending now.

Peace!

Hope y’all had fun!

see ya next SDAASaturday.

peace out homies!

Another week, Another SDAASaturday!

Yup…. Aaron’s still here!

Chapter the next! I’ve forgotten what number I was up too.

It’s been a week, I have bruises all over me, my ribs still kill me, and my leg still has an open dart wound on it… but I’ve never felt stronger.

In fact, I’m back at school tomorrow.

Minus does a quick cosmetic healing job so I don’t look like I just fought Mike Tyson…

“So, I hear you’re juggling active duty and school at the same time.” Minus chuckles. “Are you some kind of idiot?”

“I thought it would be a clever idea, to keep up appearances.”

“You realise that missions can come at any time, Day or night?”

“I realise, which makes school a perfect alibi. ‘Aaron couldn’t have killed that guy, he was at school all day!’ geddit?”

“What’s the real reason?” Minus probes.

“Huh?”

“You’re adamant that going to school is a great idea, even though it’s not… why? Is it a girl?”

“No… actually it’s a guy.”

“Oh… okay… we don’t get many gay assassins here.”

“No! I mean, I got my ass beaten by this guy, and I wanna go stand up to him.”

“Oh! Okay, that one I’ve heard before.” He laughs. “Well I just have a few more bruises to treat and you can go fight all the assholes you want, as long as you protect the ribs.”

Minus finishes treating me, and I hit the streets, hunting Tank. I need to beat him, to prove to everyone that you can’t knock me down for long.

It’s not really about him though; it’s not even about everyone else. I need to do this for me, to prove to myself that I’m stronger than the orphan who couldn’t back up his big mouth…

I am stronger than the boy who moved here.

I call Tim; let him know I’m back. “Hey bud, I know I’ve been gone a few weeks, but I’m back now!”

He replies with, “Not a good time man, Tanks holding Ryan over a pool and threatening to drown him if his sister doesn’t go out with him.”

That’s convenient. “Which pool?”

I run at my top speed, which I never realized was so fast, until I overtook a car… I make it across town in 5-6 minutes and sure enough, there’s Tank, playfully dipping Ryan into the water, Stacey standing to the side, begging him to stop…

“Hey Jason, Leave him alone.” I shout, doing my best impression of a tough guy.

“Or what? you’re gonna keep running into my fist again?” he taunts slowly lowering Ryan into the water.

“Look around Jason… No one thinks you’re cool. They’re not scared of you. They think you’re pathetic. Now let Ryan go.”

“Fine,” he drops Ryan into the water, Stacey dives in and brings him back to the surface.

“What is wrong with you!” I spit at him. “What did that guy ever do to you?” I say as I walk over to the pool and grab Ryan’s arm and pull him out of the water. “This is the nicest guy on the planet! But you torture him, why? Cause he’s smaller than you? What kind of damaged are you?”

“Who are you to talk to me like that!?” he screams as he attempts to intimidate me… but I’m not scared anymore.

“I’m Aaron Curtis, and I’m gonna give you a chance to apologise to my friend…”

“Or what!” he growls.

“I’m going to show you why these people have no reason to be scared of you.” I smile at him.

“Cody’s right, you are annoying. I’ll wipe that little defiant smirk off your face!”

“Defiant… that’s a big word; I’m surprised you know what it means.”

He grabs me by the collar of my shirt and tries to intimidate me. “Let’s see how tough you are without any teeth!”

He swings his ham-sized fist at me, and I duck it and hit him with an uppercut, sending his teeth flying.

“I’m not the one who has to worry about his teeth.”

I hear a collective ‘Oooohh’ from the crowd.

He gets up and starts swinging at me. I dodge them all… “How many hits did it take for you to knock me down, Jason? 6-7? Well you can forever tell everyone how many took for me to take you down…” I throw a right hook at him and send his ass to the floor. “It was 2!” I face his head towards the pool, and place my foot on his chest. “Now listen here, toothless! My friends are under my protection. So, I want you to remember this feeling, I want you to remember that it took me 2 hits to knock you down… So, if you ever come after me, or any of my friends again, you’ll be wishing for a few missing teeth. Are we clear?” He nods. “Use your words, Jason.”

“Yes, I understand.” He says, meekly.

“Great!” and just to rub salt in the wound, I kick him into the pool.

“When did Aaron become a certifiable badass?” Ryan asks Tim who’s suddenly found some kind of backbone.

“I’m just glad he stepped in, I was about to… and I wouldn’t have been so nice.”

Tank swims to the surface… “Can someone call an ambulance?” he says weakly.

“Sure!” Ryan chirps. He lifts his hands to his mouth and softly shouts “Ambulance!” waits for a moment then shrugs and says, “I guess they didn’t hear me! Whatareyagonnado?”

I walk away; as I leave Cody is standing there waiting for me.

“Well, look who’s back.” He smirks. “Nice to see you buddy, these other drones just can’t handle my brand of banter like you can.”

“You best be careful… you might be next.”

“Who do you think you are, Curtis… Batman?”

“No, I’m better than him.”

I push past him and continue walking.

I run back to the Corps to share my achievement with Dwight, instead I find Lennox.

“Hey Lennox, is Dwight here?”

“‘Fraid not, little buddy. He’s out with Minus and North tracking potential recruits. Can I help?”

“It’s nothing important; I just kicked the guy who kicked my ass’ ass!”

“Stop saying ass… and that’s great!” he puts his hand on my shoulder. “You deserve congratulations; I’m treating you to dinner! Do you like Italian?”

“Yes! I love Italian!” I scream.

“Thai food it is!” he laughs and steers me towards the door.

Lennox is actually pretty cool if you can get past how odd he is. He makes a lot of jokes that I don’t understand because I’m not British. He takes me to what he says is his 5th favourite Greek restaurant, on Earth.

The food there is amazing, the flavours mix together perfectly! I’ve only ever had the most basic things.

“So, Lennox, do you have a first name?”

“Charles, or Charlie if you like?”

“I think I’m gonna stick with Lennox…”

“Thank god! I hate Charlie.”

We both laugh, and I’m interrupted by the girl who walks through the door.

“Oh my god!” I blurt.

“What?” Lennox asks looking around and seeing where my eyes are focusing. “Ooh she’s cute, you interested in her?”

“Pfft no! That’s stupid! Why did she look like she’s interested in me?”

“Look, go over, say hi. But when you say her name, get it wrong.”

“Why?”

“Just trust me!”

“No offence Lennox but that sounds like the stupidest thing ever!” I mock.

Just as Chloe walks past and makes direct eye contact with me.

“Oh my god, Aaron! How are you?” She says as she glides over to the table.

“Oh, hey Carrie!” I stutter… Oh stop looking at me like that Lennox! I wish you guys could see this look, it’s infuriating!

“It’s Chloe!” she smiles!

“Oh, I’m so sorry!” I say as I go to put my hand on her shoulder and realising that’s stupid, so I awkwardly wave my arm around… “I’m sorry; I just have trouble remembering names… I’ve met so many new people in the last few weeks…” awkward silence… “So, what brings you to my 5th favourite Greek restaurant on earth?”

She giggles, “It’s my Dad’s birthday, and we’re just having a little dinner. How about you?”

I’m having dinner with the weird British guy who trained me to be an assassin to celebrate beating the snot out of your boyfriend’s best friend!

“This is my tutor! I missed a bit of school while I was recovering from Jason’s attack, so I hired a tutor!”

Perfect!

“Oh cool!” she says, now directing her attention to Lennox, “Hi, I’m Chloe!”

“I’m Charlie, Aaron’s single!”

“That wasn’t random at all” she says awkwardly.

“I’m sorry, he’s a little insane.” I say turning her away from Lennox. “I’m sorry, he has no filter!”

She giggles again, “It’s okay, I have one like that. When I first started going out with Cody, my music teacher acted like I was the first girl in the world ever to date!”

I really wish that my laugh sounded sincere but whenever someone mentions that Douche, I automatically go into sarcasm mode.

I let out a laugh that sounds like I’m saying, ‘that’s not funny you’re an idiot.’

Chloe looks at me slightly confused… “Anyway, I should head to my table! Bye!” she grins and disappears.

I collapse into my chair, and Lennox does a sarcastic impression of my laugh.

I throw a breadstick at his head.

The next day at school, I am like a rock star!

Tim is the first to greet me. “Dude, you’re the most exciting thing to happen to this place since a Dalmatian wandered in to Miss Price’s science class!”

This really is not an exciting town.

“Why is everyone staring at me?”

“I’d say it’s either admiration or fear… maybe 50/50 each way.” Tim says putting his arm around me and informing every person who walks past that we’re friends

“Stop that!” I’m really doing a great job of keeping a low profile. “Just be cool!”

“You be cool! My best friend is a walking powerhouse!”

I gotta admit the attention felt good… I had people I’d never seen before asking me weird questions. Like right now.

“Hey Aaron,” says the blonde girl pushing Tim out of her way… now I don’t know what I expected her to say, but it wasn’t… “I’m Jamie… How many people can you fit in an elevator?”

“Umm… I’ll get back to you on that.”

“Cool!” she replies, before running away giggling.

“That was weird.” Tim says looking as confused as I am.

“That’s not the half of it! I’ve been getting all kinds of random people talking to me, it’s exhausting.”

“And, that’s bad? You’re a star now!”

“Who’s a star?” asks Ally who suddenly appears beside me.

“Aaron!” Tim blurts.  “Ally, have you heard the good news?”

Ally looks at Tim, slightly worried. “Is this one of those door to door Mormon things? Cause I hate those!”

“Did you just make a joke?” I ask… “Cause it was good!” I hold my hand up for a high five… Ally awkwardly stares at it for a moment before slowly and nervously tapping my hand with hers. “One day I’ll get you to be comfortable around me.”

“Well as awkward as that was, I have news!” Tim squeaks, demanding our attention. “Tim was a witness to Jason ‘The Tank’ Phillips getting his teeth knocked out yesterday!”

“I heard about that!” she says excitedly. “Apparently some new guy showed up and whooped him.”

“Yeah, some new guy.” Tim snickers.

“I think it’s great and all, but how do we know this new guy isn’t going to be worse than The Tank?”

“I’m pretty sure it’s just ‘Tank’ there’s no, ‘the’… but yeah, this new guy… I wouldn’t worry about him.”

“Why not?” Ally asks worriedly “Our kind and their kind don’t mix.” She says burying her head into her hands. “I should know, I shared a womb with one of their kind.”

“Their kind?” I ask.

“The jocks, the cheerleaders, the bullies… There’s a reason we don’t fit in, Aaron.”

“Now hang on,” I interrupt. “You’re making a generalisation about a guy, who you don’t even have the name of, who happened to show up and defend one of our good friends.”

“He wasn’t defending Ryan! He clearly just latched on to an excuse to hit someone and upset the balance of power.”

Tim is just loving this…

“Should I tell her, or would you like to?” Tim ask, grinning from ear to ear.

“Tell me what?”

“I was the one who beat Jason.”

Ally laughs, stops for a moment, looks at me then at Tim, then back to me… then burst out laughing again. “Yeah, right!” she says continuing to laugh as she walks away.

Tim puts his hand on my shoulder once more. “That girl is an odd duckling.”

The rest of the day is a blur of whispers and pointing. The principle called me into his office about half way through the day. He lectures me on my life choices, using phrases like, ‘Violence doesn’t solve anything’ and ‘Be careful who you’ll turn into’. What he doesn’t know is that I could’ve done so much more than make the guy spit his teeth… but I’d rather avoid that conversation.

Jason deserved that beating, and I deserved to be the one to give it to him… people should get what they deserve. That’s justice.

As I walk out of the office, I hear a faint slow clap… as I walk out the door and down the hall it grows louder and louder.

“Bravo.” It’s Cody, leaning against the wall and looking like a massive ass-hat. “You really deserve the attention, Aaron. It’s all anyone’s talking about.”

“How long were you waiting there?” I chuckle.

“Several minutes, not the point.” He pushes himself off the wall. “You, big guy, are all I’m hearing about today… and I hate it. You attacked my friend and now here you are strutting around like you’re Bruce Lee, while Tank’s lying in a hospital bed.”

“First, there’s no strutting… second, if Jason wasn’t terrorizing my friend, he wouldn’t have been smacked down, and third, I knocked some teeth out and maybe gave him a black-eye, he’ll live.”

“Do you feel strong now, Curtis!” he raises his voice, “Do you think that, now you’re the big man, Chloe’s just going to magically like you?”

“This has nothing to do with Chloe…”

“Really?” he grins. “Well in a second, that bells going to ring, and she’s gonna come out of class. And when she does I’m gonna tell her what happened to Tank, and I’d love for you to be here… unless you’re signing autographs in the cafeteria.”

“The signing’s actually not until 4, so maybe I can squeeze you in.”

The bell chimes and the sea of students burst through the door… Chloe’s the last one out.

“Hey guys!” she cheeps. “What’s up? There looks to be some tension here…”

“Ask Aaron!” Cody growls. “Tank’s in the hospital.”

“Why would Aaron have anything to do with that?” she says, looking towards me, confused and worried.

“I’m the one who put him there.”

They’re both surprised by my confession, Chloe because it seems out of character from the guy she’s met, and Cody because he probably planned to accuse me and make me look bad.

“He was holding a friend of mine under the water and when I asked him to stop, he threatened me.”

The way Chloe looks at me is the most refreshing look of disgust, I just with it wasn’t coming from her.

“Aaron, there are other ways… you can’t just throw your fists around and hope that does it!” Chloe says, still looking at me like I killed her puppy.

“Actually!” says a voice, cutting in to our conversation. “Tank threw the first punch, Aaron just reacted!”

“Hey, butt out, Mark!” Cody screeches.

“I’m just sayin’… If Aaron wasn’t there, the little dude would be the one in hospital!”

“Yeah, we get it Mark! Get outta here!” Cody orders.

Mark leaves, but not before bumping my fist.

“I’m not proud of it, and I hate the attention. But I’m not sorry, Jason was picking on a friend of mine and I evened the odds.”

“You ass.” Cody growls.

“Still glad I stayed, Williams?” I smirk.

“What’s he talking about?” Chloe asks.

“Cody wanted me to stand here while he told you what I did to Jason, presumably to try and damage your perception of me for the foreseeable future… which failed, due to my confession. Which is why he just called me an ass.”

“Are you hearing this?” Cody groans, “What kind of sixteen-year-old talks like this!”

“it’s called education, Cody… it’s what everyone else is doing while you’re looking at your own reflection in the window.” The bystanders that have gathered collectively laugh, including Ally, who’s pushed her way to the front of the pack. “Listen, I know why I bug you… The crowd isn’t on your side anymore, Cody. They’re on mine, and you can’t stand it. But guess what? I don’t give a damn… Now get out of here.”

He stutters and growls, before turning his tail and staggering down the hall full of mockingbirds.

“That was nice, Aaron.” Chloe says, very sarcastically. “Everyone thinks you’re this great guy, even me… until about 2 minutes ago.” She given me a look that cuts into my soul… she runs to catch up to Cody.

“Aaron,” says Ally, appearing from behind me, “You just may be my new hero.”

“Then why don’t I feel good?”

“Need to talk?” she asks.

“How can I, every six seconds someone wants to fight me or five me.”

“Hey, come with me! I know a place where no one ever goes!”

She grabs me by the wrist and leads me too…

“The Library?”

“Yeah!” she grins, “People is this town hate books…” she giggles slightly. “For what it’s worth, Aaron, I admire you.”

“You do?”

“Yeah, you stand up. You’re not scared to say what you think… I wish I could do that.”

“Well, why can’t you?”

“You’ve met my brother? Live with that for Fifteen years and see how much self-respect you have… At least if you speak your mind, you know who you are.”

“Trust me, speaking your mind isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.”

And right before I was about to turn into a human, the phone Dwight gave me starts buzzing in my pocket.

  1. Now. Possible Mission.

-D.C

“Hey, Ally. I have to go… but can you do me a favour?” She nods. “Can you not tell anyone where I’ve gone, or even that I’ve left at all? If you can do that for me, I promise I’ll explain why I had to leave so fast, okay?” she nods again, and I run at my top speed back to HQ.

What do you think so far?

What do you mean, not enough action?

There was that whole training montage, me punching Jason…. Okay maybe you’re right.

Well stay tuned! I’ve got plenty more story yet to tell…… but I gotta pee.

Okay! I’m back. Bladder empty and mind full!

So, I race to HQ and find Dwight in his office, punching a heavy bag.

“You’re a boxer?” I ask.

“I’m everything.” He smirks. “Mission Dossier is on the desk”

“Dossier?”

“File” he says rolling his eyes. “What do they teach you in that place?”

“I wouldn’t know. I sleep through classes.” I say, opening the ‘dossier’ folder.

Inside are several pictures of the target, from every possible angle. Short, fat, balding… nothing extraordinary about him or reason why he’s a target… just a few pictures. Also, a name.

Target: Phillip Davis.

Target owns a small auto-parts store on Carden Street.

Business hours 6am – 8pm

Target usually arrives before 5am and leaves after 10pm.

Target is usually at the store every weekday and at his residence every weekend.

Store would be preferable stage for interception

“There’s not much on this guy… why is he our target?”

“Remember your first day? There was a man in my office when you arrived.” I nod. “That’s him.”

“Why is he our target now?”

“He hired us to target his competition, we did. He promised us a payment plan, and he has failed to deliver to us.”

“So, we kill him?”

“No… no one said kill. We want you to threaten him. We know he has the money, we know he’s refusing to pay. What we don’t know is why.”

“He likes money? I’m just guessing, because you know… I like money.”

Dwight chuckles, slightly. “Who doesn’t?” he quickly turns back to his usual hard-ass look. “But when a client holds out on us, we only hold back for so long. So, now I send you. You rough him up, get him to pay, and if he doesn’t I send Gabe after his family, if he still doesn’t pay… well, either way. It’s a problem for him.”

Okay.

“So, I only have to get him to give me the money, or promise to pay it back?”

“No. he has to give you the full payment, right there and then. We’re past the point of generosity. If he doesn’t, cut off a finger and tell him he has 12 hours to get the money to me, or we focus on his family.”

“Brilliant. I’ll do it tonight, before he leaves his store at 10.”

“Perfect.” Dwight says, leading me towards the door. “Now, go see Lennox, he’ll give you some tools to assist you. Then get back to school, keep your cover.”

I run back to School, right in time for it to be over.

I join the group of cheerleaders, Jocks, Nerds and stoners who emerge from the gates, acting like I’ve been there just as long as they have.

“Hey, Aaron!” says a voice, shocking me into turning quickly.

“Iwasherethewholetime!”

“No one says you weren’t…” says Stacey, very confused and scared.

“Exactly!” nervous giggle. “So, what’s up?”

“Well, I never really thanked you for helping Ryan out with Tank…”

“It was nothing, I’m sure he’d do the same for me!”

“Really?” she says, with an incredibly sarcastic look on her face.

“Yeah, you’re right… he wouldn’t even be in the same room. But I was happy to help.”

“Well I still want to say thank you…”

“And you did! You’re welcome!” I Say, interrupting her and trying to get home to prep for my mission.

“Well I wanted to do something more! So, when I heard that Chloe was having a movie night tonight, I asked if I could invite you.”

“Really?”

“And when I said that, she mentioned that you admitted to fighting Tank, but never said it was my brother you helped.”

“Yeah, and?”

“She, for some reason, admired that. You could’ve played the hero card but instead you acted like you were just embarrassed by the whole situation.” She grins, “Which we all know you weren’t.”

“Well, maybe I enjoyed it a little more than I let on.”

“Who wouldn’t, everyone here has fantasized about knocking Tank down a peg, even, Chloe, apparently. She said you’re more than welcome!”

“Wait, what? She’s okay with me being there?”

“Yeah! We’ll be watching the new James Bond at her house around 7.”

“I don’t know… I don’t think so, I just have a lot to do tonight…”

“Cody won’t be there.” She says interrupting me.

“So, it was 7?” I grin. “Text me the address and I’ll be there!”

I turn and head home, I’m gonna pretend that I’m not ridiculously excited about this.

Wait…

I have a mission tonight.

Crap.

And that’s all for this SDAASaturday!

peace out homies.

Are we still doing this? okay…. here’s the next one.

Okay, here’s the next one. let’s not drag this out.

Chapter Something or other

Dwight insists that I’m beyond the point of basic training, so he immediately starts my ass on an advanced training regimen. I stayed at the HQ the entire time…

My days would start at 5am, when Lennox would walk me through intensive weapons combat training for 2 hours.

Then at 7, North would beat the snot out of me for ages and call it ‘combat exercises’….

Then at 10:30 I’d get to eat.

At 11, Minus ran me through human anatomy and tactics training.

At 1, Minus would test me on what I’d learned with rigorous puzzles and strategy sessions.

Then I got a snack. For 5 minutes.

At 3 Dwight would take me for martial arts training.

At 5 Lennox would pick me up for weapons training.

Then I’d get another 5-minute snack break at 7.

At 5 past 7, North would take give me strength and conditioning training.

At 9:30, I’d eat dinner.

At 10, I’d be faced against several opponents at a time until I beat them all, and I could sleep when it was finished.

Every day for two weeks, mixed with tests and challenges designed to push me to the limits and shatter them.

The first few days were the most difficult, but after that, it became like breathing. I’d just remember my goal, my purpose for the pain, and before long when Lennox came to pick me up in the morning, he’d find me awake and waiting for him.

If this was a movie, the last few weeks would’ve flown by in a minute or so, set to some song from the 80’s and in every shot, I’d get better and better… but in real life, I aced everything in the first two days. No montage necessary.

Dwight says I’m his best student… I’m actually tempted to believe him. I’ve taken a hundred tests and received a hundred perfect scores.

“Well done, Aaron.” Dwight says, leading me towards my final exam. “I knew you were going to be great, but had no idea just how great. You’ve surpassed all my expectations of you. Tonight, you take the last step towards the rest of your life.”

“No pressure…” I smirk.

“No pressure.” Dwight chuckles.

“What happens if I fail this test?”

“We try again, and again, and again. We try as many times as it takes for you to pass.” Dwight stops in front of a door, “Here it is, Aaron. Your final test.” He says as he hands me a belt with a knife, a few pouches and a tranquilizer dart gun.

“What do I do, Boss?” I ask, as I put the belt on.

“There’s a red flag at the back of this room, retrieve the flag and bring it back to me.”

“That’s it?” seems like a pretty simple task compared to the others…

“That’s it.” Dwight grins. “The flag has your new designated codename printed on it, once you bring it back to me, you’re officially in the system. Good luck.”

Dwight opens the door, and I walk inside.

The door slams behind me, leaving me locked inside the pitch-black room. I attempt to find my way to the flag in the dark when a bright spotlight points directly at the flag. It also illuminates the 10 masked assassins surrounding the flag.

“Hi there boys… I don’t suppose you’re here to hand me the flag?” they draw their knives and tranquiliser rifles. “Figures.”

They’re wearing night vision goggles; hiding in the dark would be useless.
I quickly examine my belt; a knife, Dart gun, 12 darts, 3 micro gas grenades, 3 micro flash-bang grenades, and a spare pouch for storage… I have an idea, but I need it to be darker.

I dart across the room and make my way towards the ceiling light, fighting off a few agents as I do, flipping one over and blocking the tranq darts being fired at me. He’s armoured so it’s likely to just bruise. I grab a flash grenade and hurl it at the light, smashing it and showering the room in bright, blinding light… Night vision goggles don’t work too well in bright lights.

By the time their eyes adjust back to the complete dark, I’ve already taken out half of them. Night vision goggles work fine, if you put them on after the blinding light. I quickly take out the other 5, grab the flag, and head back towards the door.

I open the door, and instead of Dwight, there’s a small army, all armed with tranq rifles. I slam the door and try to barricade it with my butt.

Okay, thinking time. What’s in here that I can use… Unconscious guys, a flag and my belt. My belt! I use my belt to tie the door shut while I gather what I can off of the knocked-out agents…

New inventory.

Fully Automatic tranquiliser rifle, 5 50 dart magazines, 2 combat knives, night vision goggles, 20 micro gas grenades, 19 micro flash-bang grenades, tranquiliser hand-gun, 12 darts. I also grab whatever armour fits me. So that’s like a couple of shoulder pieces.

I put my belt back on and hide behind the door as it flies open.

I have the advantage here, they don’t have goggles on. I can see where they are, I shoot the furthest agent and as he falls the rest huddle around the noise.

I stuff the flag into my pocket and sneak around towards the door, I slam it shut leaving a couple of gas grenades in there as a present. The next sound I hear is the coughing and spluttering of the agents as they hit the ground.

I rip off my goggles and I wrap them around the handle of the door; I hear a gun cocking behind me.

“Oh hi there, you must be our backup!” I say as I awkwardly turn to face the three agents with their weapons pointed at me, “We have him trapped in there with a few of our finest, so I’m sure you’re not needed here!” I grin.

“Nice try, Aaron. They say before opening fire, I avoid most of the darts, and the ones that hit me are where I’m armoured. I take out the three guards pretty easily… until I start to feel woozy and a little like I’ve been shot in the leg with a tranquiliser dart…

Funnily enough, I’ve been shot in the leg with a tranquiliser dart.

I take out my knife and cut the dart out, the pain wakes my up a little. Enough to move on and try to locate Dwight.

Luckily, there’s a random agent just walking towards me. I hide until he walks past me, so I can surprise him. First thing I do is cut his radio. Then I cut his legs. He’ll live.

“Hey buddy, what’s your name?” I ask as I hold my knife to him.

“Reinhart” he says, nervously.

“Can I call you Reiny?”

“Sure…”

“So, Reiny, I’m looking for a buddy of mine, he’s about 6’3… black hair, scar across his eye, kinda looks like Keanu Reeves… Seen him around?” He shakes his head furiously. “Do you know who would?” I ask.

“No.”

“Then you’re no use to me!” I shoot him with the tranq gun.

I stalk through the corridors of the headquarters, towards the elevators. I figure if I head to Dwight’s office, I’ll either be greeted by him, or I use his security cameras to find him.

Everything is clear, until the elevators open and I climb in with 2 agents….

And beat the ever-loving shit out of them both.

I reach the top/ground floor. It’s pretty heavily guarded. I still have my rifle, so if I aim for necks and legs, I should be fine.

Then the wooziness starts again… perfect timing. I cut my arm and let out a slight groan, turning everyone’s attention to me. “Shit.” I drop my rifle and move like a cheetah!

I scurry across the room, avoiding darts and knives and trying to let off a few shots with the handgun and maybe take out a few dicks… I trip a few, shoot a few, gas a few, stab one… What? It wasn’t fatal!

Now there’s only a handful left. I manage to disarm them and take them on hand to hand, but with the wooziness and blood loss I’m honestly a little bit drained. One of them gets in a good shot at my ribs and suddenly I remember what Minus told me.

Flashing back, y’all. “Try to avoid taking shots to the ribs… I’m a good doctor, but I’m not that good. They’ll need a few weeks to properly heal.”

“God dammit!” I scream. Luckily the pain cuts through the wooziness and I smack that jerk in the mouth as hard as I can, he falls like a log.

“Okay stop for a minute!” I yell. They retreat and pick up guns. “I need a sec.” they start shooting; I use the jerk as a shield. “Okay asses. I’m pretty pissed now, so here’s my deal. Stop shooting me, and take me to Dwight… Or I’m gonna pick this guy up and use him as a giant baseball bat.”

They start shooting at me again, so I keep my word. I pick up the rib-hitting jerk and swing him at the left-over asses. They topple over. While they try to find they’re feet I shoot them with the tranq gun.

“You guys are rude!”

I push open the door to Dwight’s office, and the smug jerk is applauding and laughing.

“You my boy are incredible!” He stands and moves around from his desk.  “I haven’t seen anyone clear a hostile territory like that since your father.”

“I’m glad I could amuse.” I slam the flag on his desk. “You’re insane!”

“And you are an assassin.” He grabs the crumpled-up flag and un-crumples it. “Welcome to the Corps, ‘Prodigy’.”

“That’s a pretty boss Codename!”

Let’s end this ass-kicking mega chapter!

There ya go! Tune in next week for another one!

Peace out Homies.

SDAA Saturday!

It’s that time Again!

 Chapter I’m very sore…

I woke up in what looked like a hospital. I felt like I’d just been thrown in a clothes dryer with pieces of broken glass and steel. But as I looked down at my hands and chest, there wasn’t a single mark…

“What in the hell?” I blast in my shock.

“Oh, you’re awake…” says the voice coming from outside the door, “I’ll be right there!” he says as he runs through the door.

“Minus? Is that you?”

“In the flesh.” He replies. “Speaking of flesh, yours looks great.” He looks over at the monitor to my left, “blood pressure looks good, heart rate slightly elevated… naturally, considering the circumstances.” He walks over to the end of my bed and taps on my feet, “Can you feel that?” he asks. I nod. “Good! Now slowly sit up?”

I do as he says, “What happened?” I ask.

“What happened was, you impressed a lot of people… including me.”

“I mean, what happened to me? I should be as beaten up as Mike Myers’ career…”

Minus chuckles a little. “The Corps takes pride in being at the cutting edge of every possible science, we control a few labs in Dreyburn city that have been working on a healing stimulant. We’ve been slowly injecting you with it over the last 10 hours.”

“Why isn’t it available on the market?” I ask.

“It’s not ready yet… we’ve been tinkering with it for a while, and as miraculous as it’s healing factor is, unfortunately any attempt to combine it with any kind of pain relief medication causes it to have the same effect as Cyanide… so at this point it provides an enhanced cosmetic recovery but as for the pain, it will take the usual time for it to fade.”

“Minus, I was just tortured and woke up with the worst headache of my life… use small words!”

“You won’t see anything, but you’ll feel everything. Try to avoid taking shots to the ribs… I’m a good doctor, but I’m not that good. They’ll need a few weeks to properly heal.” He says dryly. “Now get some rest. Dwight will be here soon.”

“Are you a doctor?” I ask.

“In my past life, yes… but that was a long time ago.”

“What happened?”

“I’m not going to sit here and tell you my life story, Aaron.”

“How about the dot points?”

“Fine,” he reluctantly agrees. “I graduated med school in my late teens, in my 20’s I was one of the most accomplished young doctors in the country… then my wife and child were murdered. I tracked down their killers and used my extensive knowledge of anatomy and surgery to kill them. It wasn’t pretty… I was headed for death row, and Dwight approached me.” He walks toward the door. “Officially Max Minus died when the prison caught fire… yet here I am.” Then he leaves.

A few moments later, Dwight enters the room, Clapping slowly…

“Get the hell out of that bed boy… We have we need to get started.” He says smiling slightly sadistically.

“Bring it on.” I reply as I rise out of the bed.

See ya next #SDAASaturday

peace out homies

SDAA Chapter 6!

Welcome to #SDAASaturday! Here’s the next chapter of Aaron’s adventures.

Chapter 6.

I woke up at home. My head was ringing and it felt like I was Charlie Sheen’s liver.

“Hey buddy… how you feelin’?” says a familiar voice.

“Tim?” I ask, as my eyes adjust.

“Yeah buddy, how you doin’?”

“I still feel a little groggy. How long was I out?” I ask

Tim pauses for a few seconds. “Now, this may be hard for you to believe… but it’s about 5 days until Christmas.”

“It’s December? He knocked me out for 2 months?” I say, stunned.

“Yeah… I mean look outside.” Tim opens the curtains to reveal the snow falling outside the window.

“I don’t believe it.”

“You had us worried pal, but as long as you’re awake.” Suddenly a huge smile appears on Tim’s face and he bursts into laughter. “I got you man! You’ve been out for a half hour at most! That’s just Ryan on the roof with a box of rice!” he laughs some more and then gets interrupted by the pillow I hurl at his head.

“You asshole!” We laugh raucously for a few minutes. Isn’t ‘raucously’ a great word! It’s just a fancier way of saying ‘Loudly’.

Like how my bones now creak loudly when I move. After I got my ass handed to me by a human battering ram. I swear he’s been held back a few decades.

The laughter doesn’t last long. I ask Tim to get Ryan off the roof and leave.

I bet if my parent’s saw the little display of strength I made today they’d kick my ass for not kicking his ass. I need to be stronger… I need to make them proud of me.

I find Dwight’s card near the door. I collapse on the couch and stare at that card for what feels like hours, mainly wondering why an assassin has a business card… at least he thought to put ‘Pest Control’. Should I call him? Should I train with him? Should I kill for him?

I have no idea.

Maybe it’s my fate, or whatever, to become like my family.

I call him.

“Dwight? It’s Aaron Curtis. I’d like to accept your job offer.”

I’ll bet you didn’t see that coming! Except that I told you I was an assassin at the beginning of the story so pretty much all suspense was gone right out of the gate. Sorry.

Dwight was at my house within 15 minutes. “Aaron, I’m so glad you decided to accept. Your parents would be proud.”

“I’m not doing this for them, I’m doing it because I realised today that I’m weak. I need to be stronger.”

“I can respect that, Aaron. Whatever the reason, I’m glad you’re on board. Now please, I’ll show you around the stomping grounds.”

I walk outside and am greeted by 2 trench coat covered cutthroats, both as creepy as each other. One of them was older, a little more seasoned than the other, a few more scars on his hands and glasses across his face. The other was a bit younger but still looked hard as nails.

“Aaron, these are my hands. My right hand, Gabe North, and my left hand, Max Minus.” Dwight says indicating to the two man who fall in rank either side of him.

“Max Minus?” I say. “Is that a real name?”

The older man stepped forward. “My real name is Maximillian Alexander Minus. So, yeah. Max Minus is my real name.”

“That is so cool!” I say, astounded. “If he’s Minus, you must be North?”

The younger one grabs my hand and shakes it firmly. “How do you do. Get in the car.”

“Nice to meet you too.”

Dwight puts his hand on my shoulder. “You’ll have to forgive Gabe; he doesn’t think you’re worth the trouble. He didn’t know your Father. Give us a minute, boys.” The two men vanish inside the red van parked in my driveway. “Aaron, you know I’m glad you decided to join, but I need to know your reason. If you’re doing this for the wrong reason, I’ll leave and be out of your life. So, what’s your reason?”

I pause for a second.

“I got my ass kicked by a guy at school and for the first time in my entire life I felt weak and hopeless. I never want to feel that way again in my life. I never want to be weak… If being an assassin will help my find my strength, then so be it.”

“That’s a pretty good reason.”

“Is there any answer I could give that’d make you leave?” I ask curiously.

“Well, actually… no not really.”

Dwight grins and escorts me into the van. North and Minus in the front, and Dwight and I ride in the back, we start on the path, we start on the voyage to my strength.

“So, do you all work out of that brick building I saw when we met?” I ask.

“Oh god no, that was a potential client! Our facility is much more underground.”

“So, where exactly are we headed?”

“To our headquarters.”

“Well, I figured that. But I was thinking more like a location.”

“You’ll see. We can’t tell you right now. See, I trust you, but the rest of the Corps has different perspectives. They want to make sure you’re dedicated to our cause.”

“The Corps?”

“That’s what we call ourselves. ‘The Assassin Corps’ not the best title in the world but it’s simple and stylish, which is what the founders wanted.”

“How long have these guys been around?”

“No one really knows, many records were destroyed in the civil war, does that give you an idea? Our organization is one of the best kept secrets in American history, our secret society of assassins. Which is why, until you prove yourself one of us, you’ll have to be kept in the dark. And I mean that quite literally…” Dwight pulls a blindfold out of a compartment in the van. “I’ll need you to put this on now, please.”

I do as he says, and see nothing for the next 20 minutes… I’m guessing. I don’t know what the time was. I hear nothing but normal everyday sounds. Suddenly the sound stops, a few seconds later I hear Dwight’s voice. “Lennox, take us down. Code word: Scorpion.”

Then we move again, I can only imagine when Dwight said underground, he wasn’t kidding.

A few seconds’ pass and I hear mummering from outside the van, then the door opens and I feel someone pulling on my arm. I don’t resist.

Dwight removes my blindfold. “Welcome to the control centre.”

I look around, expecting a James bond style training room. But that wasn’t what I saw. “This is it?”

“Well this is only the parking garage… I guess I should’ve done the reveal downstairs.”

We climb into a nearby elevator and travel further down. When the doors open, I see something more like what I was expecting earlier. The walls are all stone and steel, computer screens and guns decorated the room, as well as portraits of key members.

“This is it, the control room of our entire operation, there are a few other levels as well; there’s my office, training room, the gym, lounge, heavy weapons training, firing range, medical bay, armoury, laboratories, cafeteria, spa…”

“Spa?”

“Not my idea.” Dwight mutters annoyed. “This is the main floor, reception and communication. This is where you’ll be assigned missions and appointments.”

“So, you just chill out in a big underground building with a bunch of killers?”

Dwight stares at me for half a second before smiling, “That’s pretty much your whole job description right there. Now, I have urgent labour to attend to, so I’ll get one of the guys to show you around, then meet me in my office at 7.” Dwight looks around the room. “Where is he?” Dwight locks eyes with a man on the other side of the room and signals him to come over. “You’ll like this guy.”

A tall, dark haired man with a small beard approached us, “How can I help, sir?” he says with a thick Manchester accent.

“Lennox, this is Aaron Curtis, our recruit. Aaron, this is Lennox, one of our weapons trainers. I’ll leave you with him for now.”

“Hey, how’s it going. I’m Aaron.” I put my hand out, offering a handshake.

“Eh, so-so. You know how it is.” He says, ignoring my hand entirely.

“I’m not sure I do…” I say, slightly confused.

Dwight turns to Lennox, “Have him back to me by 7.” He then disappears down a long corridor.

Lennox’s eyes follow Dwight down the corridor “God, I hate that man… I’d give my right arm to see him rot in hell for all eternity.”

“Well, that’s not at all an odd thing to say to someone you just met.”

“Sorry, Mate… I just got a few issues with him.”

“Shouldn’t we start the tour or something?” I awkwardly edge away from this guy.

Honestly, he was a little strange, I mean, he seemed like a nice enough guy but over the course of the tour he’s say odd things like, “This is where we teach you to make things go boom.” And “This is where we hit you with sticks until you’re strong.” The things by themselves aren’t that bad but add his accent and deadpan delivery, it’s slightly unsettling…

“Alright, Aaron. That’s everything, except Dwight’s office, which is where you need to be in 15 minutes.” Lennox says, leading me into an elevator. “We better get going, Dwight’s not a man you want to keep waiting.”

“I gotta ask, why do you hate Dwight? I mean, I get not liking your boss, but this has gotta be beyond that… Right?”

“He was right about you, kid. You’ve got insight like your mum. Dwight reminds me of my father… I hated my father.”

“Why?” I ask, even though I’m not really sure I want to know the answer.

“Well, my daddy liked to have a drink every now and again… you know; one with breakfast, one with morning tea, two with lunch, one with afternoon tea, five with dinner, one with desert, one with supper… you know, the normal! But one day, when I was about 9 or 10, he’d had a couple to many, and threw my mum of an 8-storey balcony.”

Holy shit. I couldn’t believe it! “Did he get arrested?” I ask.

“Nope, I didn’t give ‘em the chance.” Lennox says, grabbing a cigar from his jacket and lighting it with a wooden match.

“What did you do?” I ask.

“Maybe if you let me finish, I’d tell you!”

“Sorry…”

“Anyway, after he’s thrown mum, he came at me… I don’t remember feeling scared at all, I just grabbed mum’s kitchen knife and put it in the side of his head.” He says, casually putting the cigar in his mouth. “Not long after that, I was picked up by your dad… I joined the Corps to protect the world from people like my father.”

“And instead you end up working for one just like him… ironic, isn’t it?”

Lennox smirks and nods “You’re alright, Aaron. You and I are like two horribly rotten peas in a sick, twisted pod.” Lennox says, puffing smoke out of his mouth.

“Thanks? I think…” I look around the small, metal box for a few seconds. “Long elevator trip.”

“Oh, I haven’t pushed the button yet. I was telling my story.”

“Oh, right.” I awkwardly laugh.

Lennox pushes the button and the elevator goes up. “The boss’ office is on the ground floor, which is actually the top floor. Fun reversal of the usual.”

The elevator stops and the doors open, Dwight is talking to the same fat man I saw the other day.

“We had an arrangement, Phil. I take out the competition and you pay me $10,000. I opened your case and I only count $8000. Where’s the rest?” Dwight looks up and notices me, “You’re early Lennox.” Dwight says staring daggers. “And I told you, no smoking.”

Lennox pushes me out of the lift and gives Dwight the finger. “Thank you, sir!” Lennox says, sarcastically before leaving.

“Aaron, take a seat. Phil, leave… we’ll discuss this later.” The fat man, whose name is apparently Phil, scurries away.

I take his place on the chair in front of Dwight’s desk. “What was that about?” I ask.

“Just a little financial error on his part. It’s nothing! Did you enjoy the tour?”

“If I can ask… Why is Lennox so… weird?”

“He told you what happened with his father?”

“Yeah, slightly intense.”

“Did he tell you what happened after we picked him up?” Dwight says getting out of his chair.

I shake my head. “No, all he said was my dad was the one who recruited him.”

“Yeah, your father was on a mission nearby when he saw Marion Lennox fly out of a window. Your father went in to investigate and saw young Charlie covered in his father’s blood. Your father brought him in and trained him. He was doing well until your father disappeared. He was about your age when it all happened. After that, Lennox had lost two fathers, he became increasingly unstable… I tried sending him out, into the field but he couldn’t handle the pressure and came back here.”

That’s right folks. Flashback time.

Lennox sat in the very same chair that I’m sitting in now, covered in blood.

“You were ordered to kill that man and any witnesses, instead you tripped several alarms and left the maid to see your face… What happened Charlie?” Says a younger Dwight, with a bandage over his freshly scarred eye.

“I don’t know…” Says a trembling Lennox, “I just looked down and realized I was covered in human blood… I guess I just freaked a bit and panicked.”

“You didn’t seem to mind being covered in your father’s blood. Your own family.”

“He deserved it. This man, I don’t know what he did… For all I know, he was completely innocent.”

“No one is innocent. Isn’t that what James would say? ‘Every name that pops up on our list has a reason to be there, we don’t need to know what that reason is, we just need to do our job.’ Isn’t that what he told you? James had such high hopes for you… he’d be ashamed of the puddle sitting in front of me.”

Lennox leapt over the desk, grabbed Dwight by the collar of his shirt, and lifted him. “Don’t you dare use his words against me!”

“Now there’s the fire. If you used that fire on your mission, we wouldn’t be here right now… now put me down.” Lennox lets go of Dwight and climbs off the desk, standing to the side of it, rather than sitting down again.

“I need a shower.” Lennox walked toward the elevator, but Dwight stopped him before he could leave.

“Charlie, wait!” Dwight walks over to Lennox, places his hand on his shoulder. “We need you, Lennox. You’re a valuable asset, but if you can’t handle field assignments, I may have another place for you. As you know, all our older, more experienced members are becoming increasingly… well, dead. Because of this, I’ve started a campaign to inject some fresher blood into the Corps, and these new recruits will need someone to train them…”

“Not interested.” Lennox says, brushing Dwight’s hand off him.

“Lennox, you were trained by the best field agent our organization has ever seen, all I want you to do is pass the knowledge he gave you on to this next generation of assassins. You’ll never have to kill again! What do you say?”

Lennox looks Dwight in the eye. Geddit, cause he only has one.

“I say, thank you sir. I’ll take the job.”

End Flashback.

“After that day, Lennox is the only non-combatant we have in our ranks. I expect nothing but excellence form my field agents… Speaking of agents, let’s talk about you.”

“What about me?”

“Aaron, your parents were two of the organisations finest assets. Your father represented the highest capacity for human strength, not just lifting heavy things and punching hard, but he had near superhuman endurance and stamina. I once saw him get shot in the stomach, leg and chest but he just kept ploughing through and finished his mission. Your mother represented the highest capacity of the human mind, her intellect and resourcefulness, as well as her creativity was truly incredible. It’s my belief that you’ve genetically inherited both gifts, of course we’ll have to test you rigorously to discover just how much like your parents you are.”

“Tests? What kind of tests?”

“We’re going to push you to your breaking point, Aaron. We’re going to put you through intense physical and mental torments, but if you can handle it all, you’ll come out the other side stronger than you’ve ever been before, maybe even stronger than your parents.

“And if I can’t handle it?” I ask, worried about my own safety.

“You’ll probably die. I’m not going to sugar coat this, Aaron. The training is the most intense part of the job, we’ll break you, put you back together and break you again. But if my beliefs are accurate, you’ll be the best agent we’ve ever had.” Dwight looks at my speechless face. “Are you nervous, Aaron?”

“Actually, No…”

“Scared?” He asks stoically.

“No…”

“Good. Let’s begin.”

Dwight leads me from his office to a room with what looks like a bank vault in the centre.

“This is how we’ll make you stronger. Take off your jacket, your shoes and socks, and your shirt.” I do as he says. He then punches me in the face and tells his men to scoop me up. “We’re going to lock you away now, Aaron.”

One of the thugs opens the ‘Vault’ and pushes me inside. It’s freezing in here… there’s ice all over the floor and the walls. In the centre, there’s a chair, I get tied to that chair. Dwight disappears once again, and I’m locked in the room with three big looking guys in black suits and full-face masks.

One of them puts something in my hand. “you’ll be locked in here with us for the next 24 hours… if at any point you want this to end, just push the button we’ve given you and it’ll end. You’ll also most likely be killed, because you know too much. And don’t count on any alone time, we have sub zero level thermals on under our suits… we can spend weeks in here.”

Then he just stands behind me, the other two either side of the door. It’s so cold… all my wounds from today start to bite and I’m suddenly reminded of Tank’s attack, my face is stinging from Dwight’s punch and the cold doesn’t help. There’s a clock above the door that says I’ve been in here for 15 minutes.

Half an hour in and I hear a voice over a P.A system say ‘Alright, now.’ I wondered what that meant until the guy behind me punched me in the back of the head… the freezing temperature made it hurt twice as much, every part of my body is in agony… but I don’t push the button. He lands a few more blows on my back and shoulders, then his friends join in, hitting me in the face and stomach. But I don’t push the button.

This goes on for an hour and a half, then they leave me alone for a while.

5 hours in and the thugs grab bamboo sticks and start hitting my arms and legs. My ears are still ringing from the beating before, my stomach hurts so much it’s difficult to breath, my lungs are freezing as well. But I don’t push the button.

They work me over with the sticks for another hour.

6 and a half hours in and they pour water over my hand and break the ice with a hammer. But I don’t push the button.

8 hours in and they’re back to the sticks, this time hitting my stomach. All three of them. I’m getting dizzy, my eyes will just start to go dark, then the pain will buzz me back to alertness.

10 hours in, the three men all leave. The same voice comes over the P.A ‘10 hours in, Aaron. If you no longer can press the button, please give us a sign you’re still conscious.

“I can push it whenever I like. I just haven’t reached breaking point yet. So, shut up and bring it on.” I say all muffled and shaky.

The three men come back in, “Did you miss us?” one teases.

“I don’t suppose there’s any chance you have a hotdog or a cheeseburger?”

Instead of a meal, I get a Taser to my arm. It hurts 50 times worse than anything that came before. But I don’t push the button.

12 hours in and they’re back to fists, only this time there’s knuckle dusters added. They avoid my face, but make up for it. I can feel the brass tear my skin, I can barely feel it though. The cold is numbing my body. Then they use the Taser again and pain ripples throughout my entire body. I feel every cut, bruise and broken bone… but I don’t push the button. Instead I throw the button away and scream ‘Bring it on!’ at the top of my aching lungs.

14 hours in. They pour water over my back.

16 hours in, they start cutting my arms and legs with knives.

18 hours in, they use the Taser again to melt the ice on my back.

19 hours in and they leave once more.

Dwight walks in.

“You should know, your father pushed the button at 16 hours. Your mother at 12. Aside from them, no one has ever made it past hour 10. If you want to leave now, all you have to do is say.” Dwight waits for a reply.

“But, Boss…” I say barely able to talk. “We haven’t found my breaking point yet. So, either hit me or get the hell out.”

Dwight kicks my chair over and I feel it break under my weight. I find my feet for a moment, then the gang comes back in and uses the sticks, the Taser, the brass knuckles and knives on me for the next five hours. I managed to use pieces of the broken chair to fight back, but that didn’t last long… they soon overpowered me and used the splintering wood against me…

Then the buzzer sounds, and they pick my mangled ass up and drag me out of the room.

Dwight looks at me amazed…

“Well, boss. I guess we found my breaking point.” I collapse onto the floor.

Tune in next #SDAASaturday for the next chapter!

SDAA DOUBLE FEATURE!

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a chapter, but I can promise that starting Saturday, I’ll start posting more regularly.

So here we are! to make up for

 it, here’s chapter’s 4 and 5!!!

Okay, now it’s chapter 4!

I wake up to a loud crash outside. I run to the nearest window to see what’s up. I see a tall skinny guy who seems to be practising how to make things fall over. It looks like he’s training to take on an army of ceramic gnomes and brooms with a pole. He notices me watching and waves, I wave back. He then disappears inside.

A few minutes later I hear a knock at my door, I race downstairs and answer it.

It was the kid from next door. “Hey there, I’m Tim. Do you live here?”

“Yeah, I guess I do.” I respond, “Why were you hitting things with a pole at 6 am on a Monday?”

“I like to start the day with a workout, kinda” he laughs. “What’s your name?”

“I’m Aaron.”

“Cool, will I see you at school?” Tim asks.

“Well no… I hadn’t actually thought of that.”

“Didn’t your parents enrol you?”

“No, they actually have been dead for many, many years.”

“Oh, I’m so sorry…” Tim appears to be shocked, “Well you’re the first orphan I’ve ever met… that’s kinda cool.”

“I’m glad the death of my family is amusing to you.”

“I’m sorry man, I didn’t mean your lack of family was cool, I mean that, you don’t seem all that disturbed. Which is cool. Why don’t you come to school with me today and we’ll see about getting you enrolled?”

I really had no interest in going to school. But I have no interest in being an assassin either, so I went with him.

The next week was pretty uneventful, so I’ll just skip it… Actually, I wrote Jane a letter, I’ll just put that here…

Hey Jane! It’s Aaron! I’m sending you this letter from my new house! Which is just awesome! My parents are still dead, which is less awesome, but they left me a lot of nice stuff! Also, made a new friend, his name is Tim. He’s cool! He helped me enrol at his school, I’ve been there a week now!

I had a job for about an hour and a half! Tim’s mom works at a law firm, I worked there until I punched a guy they were defending.

Anyway, Kayville is nice! People are cool, and I’ll write again next week.

BYE!

I think that’s all. Yeah that’ll do anyway.

Let’s make this a short chapter, yeah?

Chapter 4 is now completed.

Initiating chapter 5.

Monday morning, time for school. it’s only a short walk from my place. Tim’s waiting for me out the front, like every other day last week.

“Morning!” he shouts from the other side of the driveway.

“And a good morning to you Timothy!” I say doing my best impression of sir Ian McKellen.

He responds with an impression of Patrick Stewart, “Shall we begin our journey?”

“Yes, we shall.” I got bored of the impression.

The last week has been great. I’d forgotten all about my parents and Dwight, I finally feel like a normal, everyday guy. Complete with friends and a job. Well, formerly had a job, anyway.

“Hey, Aaron. Why do they call it ‘Red Bull’ when the liquid inside the Blue can is Yellow? Why not call it ‘Yellow Bull’?”

“Good question, we should ask some of the higher powers to change it.”

We had a few conversations like that… I promise we’re not weird. Well maybe a little, but who the hell cares.

We arrived at school a little late, because I like sleep. So, we more or less ran straight to the first class. And the rest of the morning was pretty uneventful… until Lunch.

Tim and I came out of class and walked into the cafeteria.

“Hey Guys! Over here!” yelled a short bespectacled gentleman, a few tables over. “I scored us a sweet table!”

“What makes this table any different to any other table, Ryan?” Tim asked.

“I can clearly see Becca D’Angelo from here.” Ryan says with a huge grin on his face.

Ryan Davis was a little odd… His only desire in life is to sit at the opposite end of the room to a girl he’s never said a word too.

“So why not go over and talk to her?” I ask, taking a seat.

“What, are you kidding?” Ryan says, turning a shade of red, “She’d annihilate me.”

“That’s why you should go over.” Tim says. “I’d love to see you as a puddle under a cheerleader’s shoe.”

“Stop picking on Ryan. He’s not as smart as you guys are, he doesn’t always understand what you’re saying.” Says the young girl walking over to the table.

“Thanks, Stace. I guess?” Ryan sarcastically says.

“No problem, Bro!” Stacey replies.

Stacey was Ryan’s Twin sister, but the only thing they have in common is their birthday. Stacey is nearly as tall as I am and loves sports and outdoorsy stuff. Ryan recently spent 48 hours straight playing online League of Legends. Nuff said…

We sat and talked for a few minutes, then a little, pale, blonde girl silently took a seat next to Ryan.

“Oh hey! How was class?” I ask.

“It was good.” She mousily replies

Alexia Williams was a quiet girl; she’s barely said four words a day to me since I’ve been here.

“You know, one of these days I’ll get you to a full conversation.” I say.

“Don’t take it personally, Aaron. Alex was always the silent type.” Tim says.

“Alex… I don’t like that.” I say. “I mean, I get your name is Alexia, and the shorter of that is Alex, but to me you just look more like an ‘Ally’. What do you say?”

“Ally?” she says, a little louder. “I like it.” She smiles slightly.

Tim starts talking but I stopped listening because I saw the singular most beautiful girl on the entirety of earth walk through the door. She was perfect… She was more than perfect. She looked like what would happen if Perfect had a baby with Amazing. She was the type of girl who walked into a room and everything slowed down and Love Ballads from the 80’s started playing. I was instantly captivated.

“Hey, Tim. I don’t want you to think that I wasn’t listening to you… but I wasn’t listening. And who’s that?”

“Her?” Tim asks pointing in her direction.

“Don’t make it obvious that I’m talking about her.” I snap.

“Okaaaaay.” Tim says. “Her name’s Chloe. Chloe Miller… Beauty and Brains rolled into a Christmas package, and she is also, completely out of your league.”

“Woah, who says I’m interested.” I scoff.

Stacey joins in on the chat. “Well your eyes haven’t moved from her since she walked in.”

Ryan also felt the need to get a word in. “There’s the ‘Run away with me, Chloe!” look in your eyes.”

“You know, she’s a friend of mine, I could ask her to come over?” Stacey says. “I’m sure she’d love to meet you!” she adds.

“Well… I mean, if you want too, I’m open to it.”

Stacey stands up and yells across the room. “Hey, Miller! Come over here and meet my new friend Aaron!”

“Could you have yelled a little louder Stace?” Ryan says.

“As a matter of fact, I could have.” Stacey grins. “Chloe, this is Aaron. Aaron, this is Chloe.”

I spring out of my seat

“Hey, I’m Aaron. Nice to meet you, my names Aaron.”

“Yeah, I heard.” She smiles and giggles.

“I said my name too many times, didn’t I?”

“Not at all!” She grins “Now I definitely won’t forget it.”

“I hope you don’t.” I smile back like a moron.

“So, you’re new here?” Chloe asks.

“No, I’ve been here a week. So not as new as you’d expect, but new enough to have never seen you before.”

“Yeah, my family went on a little trip and we just got back. It’s totally boring.”

“I’d love to hear a bit more about it if you wanted to maybe…”

Before I could actually ask her on a date I was interrupted. “Hey! Who’s this?” Says a voice from behind me.

“Cody, this is Aaron. He’s new here!”

“Aaron! Nice to meet you buddy.” Says the walking letterman jacket with a bad haircut whose name is apparently Cody. “I’m Cody.” More like ‘Toady’… “I trust you’re having a good time talking to my Girlfriend?”

“Chloe’s your girlfriend?” I ask

“Yeah,” Chloe responds, “We’ve been dating about a month.” She smiles.

“Well if a great girl like Chloe thinks you’re okay, that makes you my friend.” I reluctantly hold out my hand and he shakes it firmly. A little too firmly.

“Well I guess I’ll see you around, chief.” He says, trying to assert his dominance by squeezing my hand a little.

“I’m gonna need that hand back, Cody.” I say, pulling my hand away.

He laughs a little, “Hey, babe… I think Tammy was looking for you.”

“Oh, right! I’d better go!” she kisses him on the cheek and leaves. “Nice to meet you, Aaron.” She says, looking back over her shoulder and then vanishing into the crowd. Leaving me with this dick.

“Okay, here’s the deal. I’m a reasonable guy.” He waves to someone I can’t quite see. “If you play by the rules, I’m a delight! If you don’t…” Suddenly a muscular, giant guy stands behind Cody. “I get my buddy Jason here to make sure you don’t every think about breaking my rules again. Okay?” he sneers.

“And what are the rules?” I ask, standing my ground when the behemoth stalks around to behind me.

“Rule one. Don’t touch what’s mine. And that…” he points to Chloe. “Is mine. Be friendly, that’s fine. But if I hear you about to ask her out again, I’ll get Jason to show you why they all call him ‘Tank’. Okay buddy, that clear?” Cody says reaching up to tap me on the head.

I grab his hand and fling it off me, then the ogre behind me grabs my arm and spins me around to face him. “He’s my friend. You got a problem with him, you got a problem with me.” He says before punching me in the stomach and throwing me onto the chair.

“I think that went well.” Tim says, as Cody and Tank leave.

“So, you’ve met my brother…” Ally speaks.

“Cody? Yeah, he’s great. He’s got a real Deniro thing going on there.” I reply.

“He’s a jerk.” Ally sharply responds. “He’s tormented me my entire life.” She adds.

“Well, I think he’s just got a new target for his hostility,” Tim chirps. “Aaron, here!”

Tim’s right. I better keep my distance for the foreseeable future. Haha yeah right. Have you met me? Let’s fast forward to later today.

It’s about 3:15 in the afternoon, the gang is all talking, laughing. And who should walk past, but Chloe Miller.

“Hey, Chloe! It’s Aaron.” I say awkwardly pushing past Ryan, who won’t get the hell out of my way. “Remember me, it’s Aaron!”

“Yes,” she giggles. “You made quite the impression.”

“Speaking of impressions… do you like comedy?” I awkwardly transition.

“I do in fact. Why’s that?” Chloe asks.

“Well there’s this comedy festival thing coming through and I wanted to know if I could take you?”

“You know I have a boyfriend, right? He won’t like you asking me out.” Chloe stoically states.

I grin from ear to ear. “I’m counting on it.” Cody comes traipsing around the corner.

“What are we talking of?” he stupidly asks, being stupid.

Tim smiles, “Oh, Aaron just asked Chloe to this comedy thing, and struck out…”

“Is that right?” Cody smiles despite the rest of his face looking like he’s going to vomit. “Guys, I need to have a word with Aaron. Please leave.” Chloe leaves, the rest stay.

“You don’t own these people Cody. They’re free to stay.” I stand my ground.

Ryan suddenly feels the need to speak. “Actually, I’d like to leave. I’ll see you guys at Aaron’s hospital bed.” He then bolts away.

“You were warned, new guy. Chloe’s my girl. And I protect what’s mine.” Cody attempts to use his five feet of height to intimidate me.

“And I protect myself.” I add, grinning.

“You think you’re some hero, don’t you? You think you’re gonna win and Chloe will choose you. Well I got news for you, she’d never choose you. Even if you were the last man on earth.”

“Well, I guess I’ll just have to prove you wrong.” I say, still grinning.

“Stop smiling!” he screams. “You arrogant tool!”

“Or what?” I grin even larger, “You’ll get your friend Jason to kick my ass?”

“Yes, I thought I made that abundantly clear this morning?” Cody says, as Tank appears from around the corner. “Kill him.” Cody says.

Tank advances on me. “I’ll make you eat your own teeth, Orphan.”

“You’re not gonna hit me.” I say, “I’ve known guys like you… they’re all talk, but when it comes to standing up, they can’t. So…”

Before I can finish my sentence, Tank’s fist contacts my face. “Who’s talking now?” he scoffs. Throwing a few more punches at my stomach and chest, before once again returning to my face.

I can hear Cody laughing.

I stand and throw my fist at Tank, who brushes it away, like a fly, and hits me a few more times.

Cody’s still laughing, a few more people have gathered around. I stand and hit Tank right in the mouth… and break my hand. He then turns savage and kicks my ass into a tree.

I black out after about 5 more punches.

And chapter 5 also blacks out.

There ya go, Aceholes!

Hope you enjoyed it! See you all on SDAA SATURDAY!

Peace out homies!

Challenge 1!

I messages 3 friends of mine and asked for a genre, a colour and a time of day!

Here’s what I came up with!

It’s a little after 1am. The busy, crowded streets have since been cleared, and I’m alone.
I’m sitting on a park bench and looking towards the city. The only light around me is from the moon, and a little bit off of my cigarette.
I blow the smoke out of my lungs and turn my head… expecting to see more of nothing, instead I see a woman walking towards me.
She’s dressed nice, a little too nice for this part of town.
She’s wearing a long, evening gown that ends right before her ankles to show off her stilettos… the shoes alone are probably worth more than everything I’m wearing combined.
“Hi,” she says, slowly approaching me and taking a seat next to me… “can I have a light?” She asks, holding up a cigarette and waving it around a little.
I hand her my lighter… “I appreciate it.” She says as she lights up the cigarette.
She hands the lighter back to me and sits for a moment in silence.
“That’s a lovely dress…” I say, trying to break the silence.
“Thanks.” She responds, “probably looks a little stupid in a park after midnight…”
“Maybe just I little,” I smirk. “So how’d you end up here?”
“That’s a long story…” she says shivering in the wind.
“Fair enough,” I flick my cigarette away and stand. “Well good luck with whatever miss.”
“I’ve been here every night since 1990.” She says softly. “I was coming home from a little event with a few friends of mine and they decided it would be funny if we went swimming in that fountain over there… I didn’t want to, so they pushed me in and I broke my neck. I died here 28 years ago.”
“Well that sounds like fun…” I say, inching away from her.
“Where are you going?” She asks. “I want to go swimming!” She says, laughing.
“Are you going to kill me?” I ask.
“Maybe, maybe not.” She giggles.
She stands and grabs me, and before I can blink, we’re standing next to the fountain.
“Swim.” She says, pushing me into the fountain.
The last thing that I see is her reflection in the blue/green tiles beneath me. My aquamarine angel of death is laughing.
And now I am too, standing next to her looking at my final moments of life from above.
She looks at me and smiles, “you’re stuck with me now… let me introduce you to the others.” She says, still laughing.

There ya go!

SDAA CHAPTER 3!

Okay guys, here it is! Chapter 3!

This may be the last one i post for a while…

Here it is!

The aforementioned, Chapter 3!

The next morning, I jumped a bus and headed straight to Kayville! Well technically I took bus to a Davistown and then another to Kayville, because there was no direct bus line, but you know how busses work.

I wandered around for a few minutes. Actually, it was more like an hour, and I got lost, which is ridiculous in a town that’s about 5 feet wide. P.s that’s an exaggeration…

Kayville was not like anything I’d ever seen before. Up until this point in my life, I’d only seen the inside of a creepy mausoleum and the surrounding sections of the city… but Kayville, Kayville was green, peaceful. It was a little too easy to get lost. The roads stretched out and spread apart like branches from a tree, but not a dead, ‘Bleakmore’ tree. A real tree. One like the kind that decorate the roadsides in between the tiny brick and wood houses that sit on seas of grass. Simples lives for simple people… I think I’m gonna like it here.

I end up wandering for a bit longer, lost in the atmosphere of the town, until someone taps me on the shoulder.

the face I see when I turn around is literally the last thing I expect.

a tall, thin but muscular frame, dark slicked hair, a leather jacket over a white button-up shirt, and a scar across his right eye which was also pale blue. Oh, and the other one was green.

I can’t help but jump a little.

“Sorry man, you just startled me a little.” I say, trying to act like it’s not his face that creeped me out.

“It’s okay, kid. I have that effect on a lot of people.” You know how when some people talk, their voice doesn’t match their face, like a big guy with a little squeaky voice? Yeah well. This was not one of those occasions, his voice matched his appearance perfectly. It was just as startling and creepy as he was. All deep and husky. “Are you lost?” He adds.

“No, not at all! Just taking in the scenery.” I reply, hoping I don’t end up in a van somewhere.

“Relax, kid. I’m not gonna hurt you. My names Dwight Collins, what’s yours?”

“Aaron.” I respond sharply.

“Okay, Aaron. Why don’t you tell me where you’re trying to go, and I’ll see if I can get you there?”

“Okay, sure.” Okay in retrospect, not my smartest move, but it was cold, and I was tired and thirsty. “I’m heading for 12 Morlow street.”

He appears to be struck speechless, but I get proved wrong when he speaks. “And what’s waiting for you there?”

“I honestly have no idea.”

“Nothing’s been in that house for years, I knew the people who lived there. They died about 16 years ago… actually, now that I think about it, they died 15 years ago tomorrow.”

My parents only lived for about 3 days after I turned one! Shocking, right!

“You knew them?” I asked, with my jaw wide open.

“Yeah, Jim and Claire Curtis, they were good people, Jim and my dad were close, we were all in the same line of work.” He says, clearly remembering my parents. “Such a shame they were killed. I really liked them.”

“Can you tell me more about them?” I ask, almost in tears like a moron.

“Sure kid, but first, who were they to you?”

“They were my parents.” I say, looking up at him.

“Well then, I guess we have a lot to talk about, Aaron. Jump in the car, I’ll drive you to your house and tell you about your folks.”

He points to the single coolest car I’ve ever seen in my life.

“Is that a Chevy?” I ask, practically drooling.

“Yeah, 1970 Chevelle. Cost me more than I’d care to admit… Hop in.”

After I stop swooning, I climb inside the passenger seat of the black and silver beast.

“I just gotta make a quick pit stop, and then I’ll get you home.” Dwight says.

I don’t know what it was about Dwight. He was a nice enough guy, but he wasn’t the poster of kindness, he was more like the poster of a 90’s Bond Villain. He seemed cool, but other than the first 5 minutes, he didn’t really talk much.

“This car is so cool!” I swoon a bit more.

“Yeah.” Dwight replies.

See what I mean, he’s practically a mute.

After about 5 minutes of driving, he stops out the front of a little brick building.

“Wait here, I’ll be a minute at most.”

He exits the car and approaches the building, before he gets to the door, a short fat man in a suit rushes out and hands him a briefcase and scurries back inside a moment later. Dwight comes back to the car and throws the case in the trunk before getting back in and taking off again.

“What was that about?” I ask.

“Just work stuff.” He relies pretty sharply.

“Cool.” Several awkward second follow. “So, I gotta ask, what’s with the scar?”

“Oh, this?” he says, pointing to his eye. “It’s just an accident, a little fight with my brother got out of hand.”

“And he cut your eye out?”

Dwight nods.

Suddenly Jane’s spy theory doesn’t seem so farfetched. I mean, Dwight said himself, his father and my parents were ‘All in the same line of work’. Then he picks up a mysterious case and calls it ‘work stuff’. Also, he looks like a total spy.

“Dwight, are you a spy?” I ask.

He looks at me strangely and bursts into laughter. “What on Earth would make you ask that?”

“So that’s a no?”

“Yeah, Aaron… That’s a no.” Dwight continues to laugh and comment on how ridiculous the idea of him as a spy is. Then he pulls over and tells me, “There’s your new home, Aaron. Well, technically it’s your old home, but it’s…”

“It’s perfect.” I say, in awe of the apparent simplicity of my home. “It’s just how I pictured… right down to the red door.”

“Aaron, come on. I’ll grab your stuff, you explore.”

It looks just like any other house, but to me it’s a palace. I’m just about to put the key my parents gave me in the door and Dwight stops me with his batman growl.

“Aaron, before you go in. I promised you some stories about your parents, and I’d like to deliver on that, if you’ll let me.”

“Oh, sure! Did you want to come inside?” I ask.

“I won’t take that long, you see. Your parents didn’t just work with my father, they worked for him… And the job was very difficult but twice as rewarding.”

“What was the job.” I asked, hoping he wouldn’t say CIA and prove Jane right…

“Well, every day, people would call my father, or the company, with problems. My father would take the names of the people who caused these problems and handed those names to people like your parents, whose job it was to make sure they stopped causing problems. Doing that meant the person who called paid a sum of money that was agreed upon earlier, some would go to whoever carried out the job and some went to my father.”

“Wait, back up… Are you telling me my parents were hired guns?”

“Well the actual term is Assassin, but yeah… They were. They were also the best, besides my father. Your father was the physically strongest assassin in recorded history, he could over power at least 8 fully grown men. Your mother had the greatest analytical and creative mind, her resourcefulness led to her eventually leading her own team.”

“How did they die?”

“They pissed off another assassin. One who took advantage of your birth as a distraction and then killed them. We looked for you for months, but we never found you, they’d already sent you away.”

“Why did you look for me?”

“Aaron, your parents were like family to me. That makes you my family as well. I wanted to raise you, give you a home and a family, but for whatever reason, your parents made other plans.”

I stop and take a seat on the grass, my mind still reeling from everything I’ve learned… “Could you leave me alone now?” I ask, hoping by the time i look up, Dwight is leaving.

“I understand that this is a lot to take in, but you have to understand… after 15 years of not knowing what happened to you, I run right into you, searching for answers, answers I have… I want to help you, Aaron… Let me offer you a job.” He says, extending his hand to me, and pulling me to my feet.

“Killing people?”

“No, you’d be making burgers for the staff.”

“Really?” I ask.

“No… you’d be trained, made stronger.” Dwight says, with a slight grin.

“So, I could kill people.”

“It’s a job.”

“Thanks for the offer, Dwight. But I’m no killer. Now please leave me to my extremely complicated life!”

Dwight starts to leave, but pauses for a moment. “Aaron, what do you know about Adam and Eve?” He asks.

“The Bible story?”

“Yeah.”

“They lived in the garden of Eden together, God said don’t eat these apples, they didn’t listen. God got pissed, and threw them out.”

“An accurate, if slightly rudimentary summary. But you see, our society was founded on the belief that God’s gotten a bit lazy. Drug dealers, Rapists, Criminals, all living in Eden. So, we took it upon ourselves to pick up the slack.”

“To the highest bidder. I’m sorry, Dwight. But that all sounds like a load of rich, thick, creamy bullshit.”

“You sound just like your father, so I’ll tell you what my father told him. What we do is the only true way to make a difference in this world, we’re not senselessly murdering innocent people… we’re removing a small amount of societies less necessary filth. I’ll give you some time to think. Here’s my card…Take care, Aaron.”

And after that he leaves. Well on the bright side, I’ve been in town less than 3 hours and I’ve got a possible career… So, that’s something, I guess.

After all that’s happened the last few days, I couldn’t handle any more answers. I put the remaining ‘gifts’ from my parents in a drawer and put them out of my mind, and wandered through the house. Everything was covered in dust, a few pictures of my parents, a couch, a TV… not much else, clearly their lives weren’t extravagant. I climb the stairs and see their bedroom.

The house wasn’t fancy, their clothes weren’t outstanding, even their car was normal… who’d believe they were assassins. I fall on their bed and drift away to sleep.

Ending chapter 3. Wait am I on 3 or 4. Let me check.

Yep Chapter 3. Well it’s over now. PEACE!\\
